The
Story Behind BushBeat
Angling and
Future Events
In mid-June 2003 Edward Ramsbotham contacted
me to ask if I could help him start a fly fishing business
aimed largely at assisting those members or our society who
would not normally consider fly fishing or flydressing, for
free or at direct cost. We would also teach full-paying clients,
in order to support the business.
Edward and Martin and Kate Savage had been
talking about setting up such a business for two years - now
seemed the right time to get things going and so BushBeat
Angling was born. I was being brought in both for my flydressing
expertise and to assist those women who would prefer a female
tutor. The company is named after the Bush Beat at Ovington
on the beautiful River Itchen (in Hampshire) which is teemng
with wild trout, and where Edward regularly teaches fly fishing.
Our first venture is being held this September
where we have invited clients from organisations in the local
area. The students were invited by us but very soon we were
swamped with people who wanted to come. For safety reasons
we could only take 18 people on this first course, and so
unfortunately we had to turn away a large number of interested
students - they will receive priority status for future events
of this nature.
The day consists of fly dressing and fly
fishing - demonstrations by qualified instructors, lasting
half an hour will take place. Clients will be able to fish
and tie flies for a further hour with plenty of help on hand.
Further activities include a resident artist and some entomology
talks. A lunch followed later by tea and cakes will be available
that day. At the end of the day clients will leave Holbury
Trout Lakes with a certificate and a 'goodies' bag.
If you are interested in taking place in
future programmes, please e-mail me or telephone me (see the
contact page for details). We are
currently working on next season's flyfishing and flydressing
tuition days and will be happy to discuss possible bookings
with you. |
